Ghost - Boston Underworld #3

Ghost is the third book in the Boston Underworld series by A. Zavarelli, following Talia and Alexei.

...it's also my favorite book of the series, thanks largely in part to Mr. Alexei Nikolaev. The 6'6 (wowza!), heavily tattooed Russian Vory just stole my heart. He's almost completely deaf, and knowing that it would be seen as a weakness in the Mafia, hides his condition by mostly isolating himself in his home out in the country. That changes when, as a favor to Lachlan and Mack, he tracks down Talia. Although their marriage was simply supposed to be one of convenience, it's obvious that these two are meant to be together.

I think I loved Alexei so much because he accepted Talia, even in her worst state. He understood her darkness because he also experienced it, first at the hands of his parents and then as a result of Katya's betrayal. Magda was right that these two were more alike than either of them realized, and I loved that together they were able to learn how to trust and to love.

"He knows I am capable. But here he is, dressing me. Stitching my wounds when I bleed. Showering me. Bringing me in from the cold. They are little things. But nobody has ever done these things for me."

I initially thought I'd dislike Talia after her encounter with Sasha in the previous book, but I ended up really liking her. She was in total self destruct mode at the beginning of the novel because of what she'd been through, and I was so glad when Alexei rescued her. Not only that, but he showed her kindnesses that she had never experienced. Simple acts that most people are accustomed to were especially meaningful for Talia, whose normal was neglect and abuse. It took her a while to let her guard down and trust Alexei, and they had plenty of setbacks, but something about these two just spoke to me and I really enjoyed their journey.

"He is my solace and I am his sun."

I know I've mentioned it in the last two posts, but the author has crafted this awesomely gritty, dark, and fascinating world worthy of the series name - Boston Underworld. I'm about to start the fourth book and just can't get enough of this series. I'm stoked that Alexei's brother, Nikolai, will be getting his own book too! Again, my constant raving serves as my recommendation for this kickass series.
