Crow - Boston Underworld #1
Crow by A. Zavarelli is the first work in the Boston Underworld series. It follows Mackenzie (Mack for short) as she dives into the gritty, dangerous, and downright scary world of the Irish Mafia, all for the sake of finding out what happened to her best friend, Talia. Soon, though, she gets more than she bargains for in the form of a hot as hell mobster named Lachlan. The chemistry between them is electric, and both parties get shocked as they try to sort out their complicated feelings.
Mack is just such a cool, kick-ass lead. She's had a pretty rough life and has had to fend for herself since her father's death when she was just 13. Still, under her tough outer shell she's got a good heart and is fiercely loyal to and protective of the few people she cares about. Seriously - she volunteers for an underground fight as a way to infiltrate the Irish Mafia and hopefully gain some leads on Talia, and the girl kicks some major ass. That's above and beyond best friend stuff, and I loved her character from that point on.
Lachlan is equally as awesome, which is saying a lot. He was so believable as this tough as nails mobster, but just like with Mack, there's a big ol' heart underneath that suit of armor. He's rough around the edges, unapologetic, and just totally Alpha. He's got the same fierce loyalty to his syndicate that Mack possesses for Talia, and all of those traits combine to make these two so intense, so hot, and so fun to read about as a couple. They're so similar in a lot of ways and just 'get' each other on some level, even as they fight against their blossoming feelings. Both of them were so focused on their obligations (Mack in finding Talia and Lachlan in his syndicate) and didn't want to complicate everything by falling for someone, but that's the thing about love - when it hits, it hits.
Again, I loved the intensity of these two together. It really drove the story forward and kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering if Lachlan would discover Mack's real motives and just how that would go. I loved how protective Lachlan was of Mack, and how he was a refuge for her after a life of not being able to trust anyone and having to fend for herself. These two just completed each other, and after some crazy roadblocks and setbacks, I loved how everything turned out.
"I know ye've had to be tough all your life, sweetheart. But ye don't have to do that with me. I'll protect ye, and on occasion boast because ye're mine. That's just the way it goes."
Hats off to the author for writing such an awesome series. It does deal with some heavy topics (rape, murder, Mafia stuff, etc), but if you're good with that and a fan of dark romances, this is definitely the series for you! I'm on the fourth book now and highly recommend coming over to the dark side!
