Wings of Glory series

Wings of Glory is a three book series by Sarah Sundin. Each book follows the Novak brothers - Walt, Jack, and Ray - as they proudly serve their country during WWII. The brothers are all starkly different in looks and personality, and each faces his own unique issues...including, of course, love.

I found the first book in the series, A Distant Melody, while browsing on Amazon. I listened to the many good reviews and decided to order it, and ended up ordering the next two books in the series before I even finished the first one! Sundin is a masterful storyteller, and within the first few chapters I felt transported back the 1940s. As a big history fan, I especially appreciated her attention to detail and obviously thorough research of actual battles and campaigns that were included in the books. Most of all, I loved all of the characters. I know I've mentioned this before, but a huge part of good storytelling is writing characters that feel human, like they're a friend and not just some one dimensional, flat character trapped in the pages. Walt and Allie especially were brought to life for me, I think because their struggles were so relatable; they both battled with self-esteem issues and trying to become better people, and I think we can all relate to that on some level. I found Ruth to be slightly less likable than Allie, but I enjoyed the second novel nonetheless and especially enjoyed the storyline between Charlie and May. I actually wish they'd get their own spinoff series! I started the third novel thinking I would like Ray the least out of the brothers for some reason, but I ended up really liking him - especially after the 'borrowed' Messerchmitt incident!

This is a Christian series and I think it's very tastefully done. I'm a Christian but I'll admit that I've read some Christian works that just felt preachy or cheesy, so they weren't really relatable or enjoyable. One of the things I love about this series is that the characters all deal with real issues, like self confidence, relationships, and even domestic abuse. Not only are the characters and their issues relatable, but their journeys - even with the bumps and setbacks - are inspiring and encouraging. I couldn't help but root for each character to overcome whatever obstacle, and I was so happy when they got their happy endings.

This is a wonderful series that transports the reader back to a powerful time in history. Each book is so well-written, complete with compelling storylines and characters set against the backdrop of the second world war. I just loved the Novak brothers and was almost sad to finish the series, but my sadness was at least alleviated by the knowledge that Sundin has penned a few more WWII series. I believe I mentioned this before, but Sundin is now one of my favorite authors and I would highly recommend checking out her fabulous works!
